The winner of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants 2017, sponsored by S.Pellegrino® and Acqua Panna, has been announced as Maido restaurant (Lima, Peru).
The winner, chef Mitsuharu Tsumura, who took the title for the first time, said "I want to thank all the team at Maido – I know they’re watching – I thank everyone, I have list of friends here in the crowd. Thanks to everyone who has supported us and been with us all these years. We all become chefs for one reason: to make people happy" as he received the award.
In second place was Central restaurant (Lima, Peru), operated by husband and wife duo Virgilio Martinez and Pía León. Third was awarded to D.O.M. restaurant (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and fourth spot went to Enrique Olvera and Puyol restaurant in Mexico City. Number five was Boragó restaurant in Santiago del Chile.
The Diners Club® Lifetime Achievement Award went to Guillermo González Beristáin, the renowned chef of Pangea in Monterrey, Mexico who was acknowledged for his contribution to Mexican cuisine over his multi-faceted career in the industry.
Oro restaurant in Brazil, led by chef Filipe Bronze was awarded Latin America’s One to Watch for its innovation and revolution in the Brazilian food scene. Latin America’s Best Female Chef 2017 went to Leonor Espinosa in recognition of her work to preserve Colombia’s food traditions whilst promoting sustainable food practices.
Latin America’s Best Pastry Chef was Saiko Izawa and the Chef’s Choice award, picked by those on the list, was Germán Martitegui. The Highest Climber award went to Harry Sassonand the Highest New Entry award went to Paco Ruano (chef of restaurant Alcalde in Mexico). The Art of Hospitality Award went to Astrid y Gaston in Lima, Peru.
