New recipe

For the past two years, SANPELLEGRINO has been on a mission to further reduce the overall sugar content of the Sanpellegrino Italian Sparkling Drinks, having removed 10% of the total sugar content in 2015. This comes as part of a long-standing commitment by Nestlé towards reducing the level of sugar in all its beverage and food products. Part of this reduction is down to replacing sugar with stevia leaf extract (steviol glycosides). This stevia leaf extract has a sweet taste which is why it is used as a sugar substitute.
Further recipe changes to the Sanpellegrino Italian Sparkling Drinks range now means a significant amount of total sugar has been removed from the recipes across the UK range to less than 5g per 100ml. The newly formulated range has been made available on the market from April this year, in both can and glass bottle formats.

Prior to the change, our range of beverages contained an average of 9g of sugar per 100ml. The reformulation has removed an average of 40% of the total sugar content compared to the original recipes, reducing it to less than 5g per 100ml.

The change, incorporating stevia to replace a proportion of the original amount of added sugar, has been carefully managed to ensure that the unmistakeable Sanpellegrino taste remains. Our thorough taste tests have resulted in very positive feedback.

Sanpellegrino Italian Sparkling Drinks has replaced a proportion of the added sugar with Stevia. Stevia is a sweetener that comes from a natural plant source and its sweetness is the reason why Sanpellegrino decided to use stevia as a substitute for sugar.
