Four festive destinations foodies are flocking to

We’re so spoilt with incredible destinations to visit over Christmas, it can be tricky knowing where to begin. Which is why we’ve put together a handy guide to four delightfully festive places we’d recommend in a heartbeat.

Tivoli Gardens

Denmark’s Tivoli Gardens might be famous for having one of the oldest roller coasters in the world, dating back to 1914 no less, but it’s renowned for its Christmas celebrations too.

Every year, the garden transforms into a winter wonderland, complete with more than 70,000 baubles, 1,000 trees, glittering lights and, of course, Father Christmas and his loyal reindeer.

There are also plenty of stalls in the Christmas market to tickle your taste buds. How would you like to sample such delights as aebleskiver, which are little apple pancake balls, with a warm glass of mulled wine, known as glögg? All quite delicious.

Marienplatz Christmas Market

Munich’s Marienplatz Christmas Market is a haven for foodies. Nestled amongst the fantastic craft stalls, you’ll find many a culinary joy to tempt you. Sizzling grilled sausages. Spicy Pfeffernüsse biscuits. Indulgent Magenbrot cake. And that’s just for starters.

While the enormous Christmas tree, decorated in over 2,500 fairy lights, provides an awe inspiring backdrop. There’s also a magical choir and live bands to entertain you while you enjoy the festivities and wash down a glass or two of German bier.

Bruges Christmas Market

Next stop, the fairy tale city of Bruges. It should come as no surprise to find one of Europe’s most charming places is home to one of Europe’s most charming Christmas markets.

Within its medieval walls, you’ll find treats aplenty. How does a garlicky, wine-laced Savoyarde fondue and jenever juniper gin sound? Not to mention the alluring waft of wonderfully fresh waffles.

Should the mood take you, you can also take a ride on a horse-drawn carriage and, if you’re feeling energetic, go ice skating on the rink in Simon Stevinplein Square.

London’s Borough Market

Dating back to the 13^th century, Borough Market is one of London’s most historic gastro destinations – and it’s never better than at Christmas. With arches decked out in beautiful decorations and the sound of carols filling the air, it’s a true festive favourite.

The market used to sell mainly British produce, but the variety these days is incredible. There truly is something for every taste from every place. Argentine street food, Ethiopian stews, Spanish chorizo paella are all on the menu and much, much more.
